11 February 2016 Τalk & Conversations # 6* Silvia Bottiroli & Ash Bulayev “The conditions for undertaking an adventure” 19:00

In a moment of strong pressures to always produce something “new” as our “free” time consistently evaporates, we as artists and art curators, thinkers and producers should rather think about the possibility to produce the conditions for a future that might be radically different from the present we know.

Self-determination and self-organization, building time, being idle, individual change and collective transformation are some of the concepts that we will discuss, in the form of an open conversation. This conversation aims at engaging into an act of collective imagination, at thinking together – and perhaps writing as well – about how we can make space for the future, how we can produce the conditions for undertaking an adventure.

Silvia Bottiroli is a curator and researcher in the field of contemporary performing arts. She is the artistic director of the Santarcangelo Festival, the longest-running Italian festival dedicated to contemporary theatre, with a particular focus on the relationship between art and the public sphere. Internationally, she is collaborating among the others with Aleppo – a laboratory of experiments in performance and politics – for the research project “Back to the order” and the curation of experimental theoretical modules and practices, that also lead to two editions of The Nomadic School.

Ash Bulayev has worked for over 15 years as curator, producer and artist, at the cross-section of contemporary performance and time-based visual arts. From 2012 – 2015 he was the Curator of Contemporary Performance at EMPAC (New York). Currently he is researching a new co-production model for supporting contemporary performing artists whose art practice and means of production has become increasingly trans-national and borderless, while providing the tools for more dispersed strategies, means of support and production for their artistic work.

6 February 2016 Διάλεξη / Talk *#5 Grant Watson & Through the Fog
18:00  Grant Watson : “How We Behave” Presentation by Grant Watson about his project “How We Behave”, His research projects include “How We Behave” (with If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam), which explores the “Care of the Self” in relation to contemporary practice; and “Practice International” (Iaspis, Sweden, Casco, Holland, and Raw Material, Senegal) and “Tagore, Pedagogy and Contemporary Visual Cultures” (Goldsmiths College, London) both of which look at historical and current examples of art and cosmopolitanism.      Grant Watson teaches Curatorial Theory at the Royal College of Art in London. Grant Watson was Senior Curator at the Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva) London (2010–2014), Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MuHKA), Antwerp (2006–2010), Curator of Visual Arts at Project, Dublin (2001–2006). Recent exhibitions include How We Behave (Nottingham Contemporary and The Showroom in London), Social Fabric (Iniva, Lunds Konsthall and Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai), Keywords: Art Culture and Society in 1980s Britain (Tate Liverpool), and the touring retrospective Sheela Gowda: Open Eye Policy (Van Abbemuseum, Lunds Konsthall and Irish Museum of Modern Art).

19:00 Through the Fog: Descripting with Nick Aikens, Chrysanthi Koumianaki, Christian Nyampeta and Grant Watson
Within the context of the exhibition ‘Through the Fog: Descripting the Present’ at State of Concept curator Nick Aikens and three of the participating artists will exchange images and ideas related to their work. The artists will show excerpts form projects, research and respond to each others practice.  In a present moment defined through a foreboding mix of crisis and transition, what Nick Aikens describes as a ‘fog’, modes of understanding and articulating our subject positions seem vital. Drawing on varying frameworks such as the field of idiorhythmy, utopian architectural plans and Michel Foucault’s assertion that ‘biographies could be the basis for a work of art’, the work of Chrysanthi Koumianaki, Christian Nyampeta and Grant Watson explore the complex relationship between protagonists and their context, forms of subjectivity and modes of address.
